The recent school holiday, saw the start of my Creative Maths Holiday Programme for Primary Children. It was an enriching experience for the children as it gave them the opportunity to explore their different learning styles.

An activity using the m- Wizy cards to discover the magic of mathematics.

Creative Maths is a programme for children 7 to 12 years old that promotes creative thinking skills by solving problems using mathematics as a basis. Each activity provides children with the opportunity to apply skills or ideas they have learnt in mathematics to help them solve puzzles and questions. Each activity in turn aims to nurture children’s creative thinking skills.

It was created by Madam Teoh Poh Yew and you can find out more about her work by visiting her website at: www.creativewizard.com.my

Alif, an 8 year old, working with a 7 piece puzzle called tangram to form numbers.

The children work together and share their ideas among themselves and discuss solutions to the problems. This provides a very conducive and favourable environment for children to develop their overall development in the area of language as well as enhance their mathematical knowledge and not to mention the social emotional aspect as well when they interact with each other.

The demands for academic performance in school sometimes leaves little room for children to think independently. Creative thinking skills is a tool we all need to nurture and it is not something that is only present in a selected few.

Xue Kee, a 10 year old, explaining her rational to her classmates.

As a facilitator and a teacher for the programme, I have to be careful to provide just enough support for the children and not to impose my understanding. All in all we had an interesting week.

With kind permission from the parents, I have included some pictures of our recent holiday programme.

Recently after visiting one of our SEGi graduates in Johor, Malaysia for the MCI International Diploma in Montessori Studies, I felt that they should be able to have continuous feedback and to have a platform for them to share their ideas and suggestions especially for others who may still be on their teaching practice.

Montessori Centre International Diploma in Montessori Pedagogy from MCI (UK) is one of the leading Montessori education providers in Europe. This course is also being offered in Malaysia through SEGi COLLEGE Subang Jaya under the Faculty of Education and Social Sciences.

For the graduates of the MCI International Diploma, teaching practice is a platform for the students to put theory and practice together within a Montessori school setting. This is because it is important for students to fully comprehend and put into practise what they have learnt throughout their course.

With this thought I mind, I would like to keep the spirit of Montessori spirit alive in each and everyone of these students who can now call themselves Montessori educators or directress. I realised that there is a need for them to have constant feedback and updates on what they have learnt. Therefore my aim is to seek fellow tutors and students who are on the Montessori Centre International (MCI) course to freely contribute to this website. Please feel free to share your learning experiences in the classroom as well as any reflections that you may have. I look forward to the contributions from MCI students and tutors to this website.
